Your call for reform of the planning system (editorial, 6 December) is short-sighted and potentially damaging.
At a time when current laws have proved inadequate to protect a major site of special scientific interest from the Trump housing development, or to save listed buildings from demolition threatened by Caltongate, or to avoid endangering Edinburgh's world heritage status, the worst possible response would be to weaken further the few constraints that exist.

EDINBURGH MAY have retained its World Heritage status, following the visit of two Unesco inspectors last week to assess whether the city was still worthy of the title. Their trip came in the light of a number of planned new developments - including Haymarket, Caltongate, Leith Docks and the St James Centre - and has led to soul-searching about the future direction of our capital city. Debate has raged over whether World Heritage status is desirable, or if it is a hindrance to development.

When Edinburgh's historic heart was awarded World Heritage status in December 1995, it was widely seen as a major coup. It would have seemed fanciful that just over a decade later, Edinburgh would be facing the prospect of losing the title.
