SOOT Edinburgh
From October 2005, Canongate Community Forum (better known as SOOT - Save Our Old Town) campaigned to protect listed buildings and people's homes on the Canongate, the lower part of The Royal Mile in the World Heritage Site . Caltongate was the name given to the controversial £300million project, which could have cost Edinburgh her World Heritage Status.Caltongate was to be built on the site of the former New Street Bus Station which London Developer Mountgrange owned.. But they also wanted to build on Council owned land and Common Good Land. Historical buildings, 18 homes and 2 local businesses were earmarked for demolition. The Council approved the whole scheme on the 6th February 2008. Then in March 2009 Caltongate developers Mountgrange went into administration Now there is a big empty gap site, what does the future hold?
